The prefecture of Heraklion is located in
the central Crete. Its capital is Heraklion. With a population
of 140.000 it is the third largest Greek city. The airport
is located only a few km east of the city.
The coastal areas
near Heraklion and especially to the East have a number
of large tourist developments. Some like Hersonisos and
Malia will appeal more to the party crowds but there are
also some quieter resorts.
Inland, the region is less mountainous than its neighbouring
prefectures to the West but by no means flat.
The South
is far less developed and will appeal more to independent
travelers.
Tourism is not very developed inland although
it is possible to find simple accommodation in many villages.
Only a few offer web sites at this point in time.
