The prefecture of Rethymnon is
located in cantral Crete. Its capital Rethymnon (or Rethimnon)
has a population of about 25.000. Although Rethymnon has
a harbour with some connections to Piraeus it has to rely
on the airports of Chania (60 km) and Heraklion (90 km)
for air connections.
The region of Rethymnon is mountainous
with the White Mountains in its western part and the Ida
range in the East but the coast has a
number of excellent beaches.
The larger tourists developments are located on the North coast.
The South coast is relatively underdeveloped,
with the exception of Agia Galini and the area around Plakias.
Tourism is not very developed inland although it is possible
to find simple accommodation in many villages. Only a
few offer web sites at this point in time.
